The last finish of 2017

Sometimes we have an image in our heads of what something is going to look like and then “design choices” need to be made to sort out another issue – that was the story of my final make for 2017, finishing it just hours before it needed to be gifted.

Originally, I had gone looking for some Harry Potter themed fabric. The recipient is most definitely obsessed with all things Harry Potter, and is looking forward to his 13th birthday so that he can make the (online) trek to Pottermore, and go through the sorting hat (meanwhile there are a few concerns that what are we going to do if he is sorted into Slytherin… I am sure there is a support group for parenting your Slytherin out there somewhere). Unfortunately I had to change my approach when I couldn’t find any Harry Potter themed fabric I liked (I know, it isn’t about me, but honestly).

So a change of fandom.

Originally this pillow was only going to be the soccer/football fabric and the red… but a slight error in judgement when I couldn’t find my Hera marker resulted in something that needed fixing between the quilting and binding/construction part of the process. Enter Star Wars. I am in the midst of making a Steampunk Quilt using lots of different themed fandom fabrics (blogged about it here); I have finished the cutting out bit of it all so I now have a whole lot of fabric which is available to be used in the overall making of things (I have a plan to use much of the leftovers, more on that another time).

Long story short – one of the patches pictured above is for practical reasons, the other is for “balance” 😉

2016FAL – Q2 Goals

2016 Finish-a-Long Q2 goals…

Following on from my last post and the round-up from Q1 (where I managed to finish two things and not the number I had wanted to). So onto this quarter.

  1. Modern Medallion – the hand quilting continues, I really want to get this done.
  2. Quick Curve Ruler Playtime – I bought myself a Quick Curve Ruler, I had a play with it. I am thinking a cushion. Perhaps.
  3. M is For – I made an ‘M’ (see the photo above). I would like to make this into something for a special someone.
  4. Winter is Coming – well it really is. But this is a quilt. Or a series of cushions (I sense a theme).
  5. All of the Fandoms Steampunk Quilt – this is for someone special and I do need to finish it. Perhaps this year.
  6. The Redwork Quilt – this was once in the garage. A UFO since 2005 (yes you read that right), I just need to do a little bit to it. And I will.
  7. Swoon – pretty sure everyone “needs” to make this quilt
  8. Happiness Is – hexagons. Need I say more.
  9. Yoga Shawl – sometimes I knit
  10. I shall call him George – an epic monster of a quilt (which I somehow think will be finished in Q4 2040 or something)

and I shall blog the progress of them all, and hopefully the finishes.

I love to finish – Q1 revisited

Back at the beginning of the year I joined in with the 2016 finish-a-long… and here is how I actually went with that…

What I decided I wanted to do:

  1. Modern Medallion
  2. Salty as Shit swap
  3. Rainbow Mini Swap 2
  4. M is for…
  5. Redwork UFO
  6. Swoon
  7. All the Fandoms Steampunk quilt
  8. Winter is Coming
  9. Happiness is…

What I did:

  1. Salty as Shit swap
  2. Rainbow Mini Swap 2

I have worked on other things, and I have started some new ones…  in a couple of days I am going to have the big reveal on my Q2 goals… wonder what will make the cut.

Progress – Steam Punk

Steampunk March 1

A while ago, I wrote about my All the Fandoms Steampunk Quilt, and there has been some progress with it – somewhat slowly I must admit.

But this is a quilt with much feeling. The process of making it is an act of caring. Each choice is a deliberate one, each character I don’t know (but who is well known by the intended recipient) is met with an explanation and knowledge of a world I (with some exceptions) I know little of (insert the Marvel Universe into this sphere of unknown for me).

How often is it that we make things with love in our hearts?
